Put The Spark Back Into Your Career
This blog is part of a series of blogs by Sarah Berry focused on Career Change
Are you working hard but lack the time or energy to do the fun stuff? Are you constantly being chased to do something as deemed more important?
May be you had an opportunity to change job a while back or maybe you missed the signs that a change of career direction would be good for you.
When things aren’t going to plan, you are operating in the ‘unconscious zone’. The unconscious zone is a place where you do your job automatically but you don’t have any fun. In fact, the fun times always seem to be on the horizon and just out of your reach. Being in the unconscious zone often means that you ignore what is best for you because you are too busy sorting out a crisis. If anyone asks you what you are doing, you could probably make a strong case as to why things are the way they are and why you have ended up in this place.
Is it, therefore, time to put the SPARK back into your career?
First of all, you need to look at all the clutter that you have allowed to build up in your job. The type of stuff that annoys you but keeps you firmly stuck in the ‘unconscious zone’. Make a list of at least 10 things that need to change at work. You may want to start with simple items and build up to the more complicated ones. Keep asking yourself, ‘What am I putting up with here?’
Focus on your boundaries
Are you allowing your boundaries to be broken? Do you allow people to steal your time, interrupt you when you are talking or cut you down in public? Are you putting up with bad behaviour because you want to avoid trouble or confrontation in the office? Do you secretly want to have an easier time?
Realise that anything that upsets or annoys you at work is because a boundary of yours has been crossed. If you went home tonight and an unknown person was eating food out of your fridge and sitting on your sofa watching your TV, you would do something about it. Boundaries need to be put in place at work and they often need to be revised and re-drawn If someone at work is monopolising or ruining your time, you need to do something about it. To tackle the issue, you may need to re-educate the people around you a bit.
Get in touch with your desires and focus on what you want to achieve in your career. Create a clear mental picture of what you are good at and focus on your special talents. Stop putting up with things the way they are and begin to challenge your energy on your desires. As you create more of what you want in your job you will start to come back to life again.
